TUNDRA FLOWER
By Pandora Wilson

Short tops, deep roots
Huddled close to the earth for protection;
There is a wisdom in this, a knowing,
In this pattern of growing, in your desert place
Atop this mountain.

There is a spartan and serene grace
Where the spring comes late
And the frosts come early,
And the wind never ceases in its blowing;

To scrape and scour you, to freeze and thaw you,
To shape from your perseverence
An ultimate perfection
